St James' Park and match-day Newcastle
Few football grounds in the country sit as close to a city centre as St James' Park, and on home match days the pubs across Gallowgate, Strawberry Place, the Bigg Market and down towards Central Station are full hours before kick-off. Supporters travelling in by Metro and train search "pub near St James' Park" from the platform, and the pubs that appear with current hours and a clear welcome win the trade.
That pattern repeats for rugby at Kingston Park and for the big events at the Utilita Arena. The Great North Run in September brings tens of thousands of runners and spectators through the city and across the Tyne Bridge, and the pubs along the route and around the Quayside see one of their busiest days of the year.
