What the checker looks for
Fifteen checks, weighted towards the ones that actually cost pubs bookings
Pub essentials (35 points)
Is your menu a readable web page or a PDF? Can someone tap to call you? Is there a booking link, your opening hours, and a postcode for sat-nav?
Core on-page SEO (25 points)
Page title, meta description, a single clear H1, subheadings, image alt text and a canonical URL — the signals Google uses to work out what you offer.
Mobile & technical (20 points)
A responsive viewport, HTTPS with a proper redirect, and the size of your HTML document as a rough guide to page-builder bloat.
Local & social (20 points)
Local business structured data, a Google Maps link, active social profiles, and whether you look appetising when shared on Facebook or WhatsApp.
Questions about the checker
Is the pub website checker really free?
Yes, and there is no email gate. Paste your address, get your score and your list of fixes immediately. We built it because most pub websites fail the same handful of checks, and knowing which ones is genuinely useful whether or not you ever hire us.
What does the checker actually look at?
It reads your homepage source and checks the things that decide whether a hungry stranger on a phone becomes a booking: whether your menu is readable HTML rather than a PDF, whether your phone number is tap-to-call, whether there is a booking link, whether your opening hours and postcode are on the page, plus the standard on-page SEO signals — title, meta description, headings, image alt text, structured data and social sharing tags.
Why is a PDF menu marked as a problem?
Google struggles to read text locked inside a PDF, so your dish names, your cask ales and your roast descriptions never rank for the searches people actually make. On a phone a PDF also means pinching and zooming. Publishing the same menu as an ordinary web page fixes both at once.
Is this a page speed test?
No, and we are careful not to pretend otherwise. We report the size of your HTML document, which is a useful signal of page-builder bloat, but a real speed test measures images, fonts, scripts and how quickly the page becomes usable. Treat the HTML size as a hint, not a verdict.
Why couldn't the checker read my site?
Two common reasons. If your site sits behind bot protection such as Cloudflare, an automated request gets challenged before it ever sees your page — that is not a fault with your website. Alternatively, if your site renders entirely in JavaScript, the initial HTML can come back nearly empty; that one is worth looking into, because search engines and AI assistants can struggle with it too.
What can't an automated check tell me?
Plenty, and it is worth being honest about it. A robot cannot judge whether your photography makes someone hungry, whether your Google Business Profile hours match the sign on your door, whether your menu descriptions actually sell, or how you stack up against the pub two streets away. That is what a manual audit is for.
